St. James Hotel Completes Renovations

Now booking rooms and dinner reservations.

After numerous renovations, the historic St. James Hotel officially opened for business Monday, June 22, 2009.

Purchased by the Express UU Bar Ranch in January, the St. James hotel has been given a facelift, but continues to honor the notable guests that have walked the halls since the 1870s.

First built in 1872, many famous outlaws have stayed at the St. James over the years, including Wyatt Earp, Jesse James, Buffalo Bill Cody, Annie Oakley, Billy the Kid and Thomas James Wright. It is said that some of these spirits still haunt these halls today.

The St. James hotel has retained its haunted appearance, with the creaking staircase and tilted chandeliers. The rooms remain named as to where the outlaws stayed and room 18 which is said to be haunted by T.J. Wright will remain intact and un-booked as if he were still rooming there today.

Express St. James not only accepts hotel reservations. It is also accepting dinner reservations and will bring a taste of fine dining to New Mexico.

With a variety of fare such as salt-crusted roast prime rib of beef and sautéed rainbow trout, even the finicky diner will leave satisfied. Only a short drive from surrounding areas, the St. James will provide the perfect special occasion experience.

Inside dining is available, where you can enjoy the ambiance of the fireplace and the antique bar, or venture to the open air courtyard and experience the rock waterfall amid the stars.

The historic hotel is home to world renowned Chef Ralph Knighton. Chef Ralph has an extensive resume including time as the personal chef to Governor Keating of Oklahoma. He has also co-authored “Ooh La La, Cuisine Presented in a Stately Manner.”

“I’m ready for the doors to open, that’s when the fun begins. I love to entertain,” said Knibhton in a recent discussion.

In addition to the hotel and gourmet dinner menu, the St. James will also offer a lunch menu, including items such as chicken fried steak and bison burgers, catering to the casual diner in the area.

The restaurant and hotel aren’t the only things that hold appeal. The former saloon has also been renovated, but still displays bullet holes in the ceiling from the Wild West gunfights. It offers a full menu and will serve as the only watering hole within 18 miles.

The Express St. James Hotel is one of the few historic hotels still booking reservations. Call for reservations (575)376-2664.
