AMARILLO, TEXAS -- A dedication ceremony was held Wednesday morning to unveil a historical marker at the location that once was the old Amarillo High School.

It burned down in 1970, and now the Amarillo Senior Citizen's parking lot sits where it once stood. The marker was made possible by a partnership between Center City, Amarillo College, and the Amarillo High School Reunion Association.

The marker is not just to remember the old AHS building, but to include all Polk Street Schools, Elizabeth Nixson Junior High and the Red Brick school.

"History is so important because in another generation people might not know this was a high school, but this was the first high school in Amarillo and at one time thousands of students came downtown everyday to go to school," said Beth Duke, Center City Executive Director.

The dedication ceremony coincides with May being National Historic Preservation Month.
