766 N. GRAND, AMARILLO -- Good fences make good neighbors. Nobody wants to subject his neighbors to the sight of a leaning, rotting fence pocked with split and missing boards. Maintaining wood fences is not hard, as long as you are diligent.

1. Check to ensure your wood fence is stained and sealed, especially the parts that are set into the ground.
2. Create proper drainage to keep water from pooling along the bottom of your wood fence.
3. Rake leaves, branches and other debris away from your fence as soon as they pile up. As the organic matter decomposes, it can cause dry rot. Decomposing plant matter will also attract bugs, which can damage your wood fence.
4. Trim back vines that hang on the fence, and keep bushes and tree branches cut back.
5. Move sprinkler heads away from your wood fence. Being constantly soaked in the same small area can contribute to wet rot.
6. Re-stain your fence every 2 to 3 years.
