The Amarillo High School art collection featured at the Amarillo Museum of Art
AMARILLO, TEXAS -- Since 1945, Amarillo High School has been building a prestigious art collection. That collection is now on display until April at the Amarillo Museum of Art.
The exhibit is called Uncommon Dream - The Amarillo High School Collection.
Every year for the last 14 years AMoA has honored a collector or collection by hosting a gala and exhibit featuring works from that collection.
Synonymous with the AHS collection are the memories of the major Amarillo High School fire back in 1970; students and faculty rushed back into the building to save pieces from the collection.
Over 90 pieces are on display at the museum, and several noteworthy artists are featured in the exhibit. From variations of American impressionism to the Taos school and southwest art; the show has something for everyone. The exhibit even has a documentary playing on a continuous loop next to a portrait of R.B. Norman, who was instrumental in starting the collection.
"I do know that people in the Panhandle especially in Amarillo knew about the collection for many years, but for me to find out that there was such a high caliber museum fine art collection in a public high school was such a foreign concept because I never really run across one," said Graziella Marchicelli, Executive Director at AMoA.
This Thursday, February 18th is Third Thursday at the museum. The event will feature a gallery talk at 7 P.M. and music by Josh Paulson. The gallery talk will focus on the AHS exhibit.
