Potter County Memorial Stadium
AMARILLO, TEXAS -- It's officially official, a new baseball team with a new name will grace the old ballpark in the summer of 2011. Reunion Sports Group, owner of the Dillas, had filed for a temporary injunction to stop the county from renting out the stadium. That injunction was not granted. So, that means the county can now go ahead with the new group, the Southern Independent League.
Former general manager and possible general manager of the new team Mark Lee, said that's nothing but good news for the fans.
"I think for Amarillo's sake, the beauty of it is the fact that you know, now Amarillo finally gets a chance to stand on its own. You know, I can assure you that any dollar spent with us is going to stay home and that's a good thing. I like the leg, I like the ownership and stuff, you know I'm pretty excited about getting going."
The president of the Southern Independent league, Scott Barry, said they hope to hire a general manager this week and then let the GM assign the staff.
Potter County commissioner Manny Perez, suggested the county file charges against Reunion Sports for bouncing two $25,000 checks. Those charges have yet to be filed, and if or when they are we will let you know.
On October 1, Reunion Sports Group lost their contract with Potter County after defaulting on several months rent. The sports group owes the county $75,000 in rent, and many vendors and employees are still waiting to get a check as the group hasn't paid anybody since August.
