CANYON, TEXAS -- There are an estimated 1,500 to 2,000 homeless veterans in our area, and one local group is dedicated to bringing those veterans off the streets and giving them an opportunity for another chance to start over.
Veteran Services Unlimited is committed to the physical and emotional needs of men and women veterans who are poor and homeless.
"Abraham Lincoln said that a country that does not honor her heroes will never endure and its the truth. We are the only country on the face of the earth that does not take care of our veterans and that's a sad commentary for us," said Randi Laird, Veteran Services Unlimited President.
When it comes to understanding these issues Laird says he has first hand knowledge of the situation.
"I believe because I am a disabled Vietnam veteran -- I also was homeless and lived under a bridge for 10 years. I was not a throw away -- I still had some hope and thanks to one person that took the time to come talk to me I was able to get off the streets."
Laird says we all have a responsibility to our country and to those who gave us what we have today.
"We can't just drive by homeless folks when you see them like they're stone statues because they're not -- they are people and they have served our country and we have to do what we have to do. That's part of the deal -- the freedom."
Veterans Services Unlimited provides food, clothes, transportation and temporary shelter.
They are always looking for donations whether it be money, clothes, furniture or even land.
