CANYON, TEXAS -- The deadline is June 21 for the municipal customers of SPS to respond to its latest rate increase proposal.
Cities from here to Midland could see a $10-$12 bump in their electric bills each month if it goes through.
Monday night Canyon's City Commission voted to suspend a decision for 90 days to get a closer look at what SPS wants to do.
Cities can deny the hike, but it would then go in front of the Public Utility Commission, which would make the decision, leaving the cities helpless.
Canyon City Manager Randy Criswell says this is the right move.
"What we can do is look out for folks that live inside the city of Canyon, and other cities will do that for their citizens, we can make sure if a rate increase happens that it's justified, necessary, and it's beneficial."
Criswell is part of a steering committee that's urging cities to take this approach.
Amarillo City Commission will take up the same issue Tuesday.
