AMARILLO, TEXAS -- The Don Harrington Discovery Center has already started their camps for kids this summer. But one camp is especially unique for kids living with Type 1 Diabetes.
"Chaotic Chemistry" is the theme, children 4-7 will have the opportunity to have fun with science experiments. Those experiments will teach the kids how to create soda bottle rockets, and make slime that bounces.
The camp also helps the parents of these children have peace of mind, because it's overseen by a medical professional and select staff have been trained to handle Type 1 Diabetes.
"This is a great opportunity for the parents for three hours to just think, we're gonna take care of their kids, we're gonna check their sugar, we're gonna give them juice if they're low, we're gonna let them run around if they're high, and the kids that bonding experience for them because you know they are different," said Kim May, Discovery Center's Business Development Director.
May also says the camp provides more than just fun with science for the kids, it also helps them create bonds with other kids who know what they're going through.
"This is an opportunity where they come, they're all together, they're friends - it's like a family, and it's, it's really great 'cause you bring out the checkers to check their sugar and they all start going, oh let me see your machine...oh yours is bigger...oh that's great...so it's really fun to see that bonding going on."
The camp will continue for the rest of the week and if you are interested registration is still available. Click here for a link.
