CANYON, TEXAS -- College students living in cardboard boxes is what you'll see on the campus of West Texas A&M University this Wednesday.
WT's annual Shack-A-Thon/Give-A-Goat program kicks off April 18 at 8 a.m.
The program is extremely popular among the student body and draws student groups from across the campus to participate. According to the university, the event challenges students to build and sleep overnight in shacks they construct out of only cardboard, wooden pallets and duct tape.
Along with the shacks, students raise funds to help purchase a large number of goats for milk for people in the Kenyan region of Turkana. For each $50 raised, a goat can be purchased along with its veterinarian fees, minimal dairy business equipment and the delivery.
This is the fourth year for the event that was started in the fall of 2008 by the WT Alliance. Five campus ministries head up the event that sets up a unique image of poverty on the campus.
The WT Alliance works with Amarillo based Christian Relief Fund.
