Amarillo Lawyer Jeff Tankersley was killed Sunday afternoon when a vehicle struck him while he was riding his bicycle about one mile north of I-40 down South Dowell Road.
According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, Tankersley was traveling northbound- wearing a helmet- when he was struck by a 2002 Honda Civic traveling southbound in the northbound lane.
The driver of the vehicle was 20-year-old Brent Kyle Browning.
Tankersley had already passed away when law enforcement arrived at the scene, and Browning did not sustain serious injures, officials said.
Troopers are investigating the crash to see if drugs or alcohol were factors.
One witness says Browning was texting while driving.
Tankersley's wife Amy lost her father last week when he had a heart attack while riding his bicycle. Tankersley also left behind two children.
The Amarillo Swim Team will be hosting a family support meeting for the Tankersley family at the Amarillo High School track at 7 p.m. Monday evening. Amarillo Swim Team Head Coach Ron Lee II says the family needs all the support it can get right now. He also added Tankersley was riding his bike Sunday as part of his training for an upcoming triathlon.
