AMARILLO, TEXAS -- Parents, it's hard to believe but school starts in just a few short weeks. In fact, registration for Amarillo and Canyon Independent School Districts is next week.

Before too long, it will be time for Friday night lights, and the bells ringing, welcoming in a new school year.

But how do parents know what immunizations their children need and documents to provide?

"It can be overwhelming that's why it's important to keep your regularly scheduled wellness visits with your doctor that stays up pretty good on that," said Carrie Finley, Mother of three.

"Many of the school nurses will be at the schools whenever the children register for school and they can certainly help them with that," said Brenda Adams, AISD Student Health Services.

You'll need to bring your child's immunization records, birth certificate or certified copy, Social Security card, and proof of residency. If you're waiting until the last minute to schedule those appointments, know this, the Department of Public Health is no longer giving children who have insurance vaccines.

"It's important parents realize that this year if their children are insured they must go to their own private physician to obtain their vaccinations," said Adams. "If they wish to obtain an exemption they must notify the Department of Public Health in Austin. And they can do so online or they can fax in that information or they can work with their school nurses at the campus prior to school starting".

For Carrie, a mother of three, this year is a bit different, because the children are changing schools. But her anxiety of that fact was short-lived with all the information parents need just a click away.

"It can be chaotic but we have the technology so it's great to use the technology because it's right at your finger tips," said Finley.

A chaotic transition into a new school year, but one that parents and some students are looking forward to.
