AMARILLO, TEXAS -- The Maverick Boys and Girls Club in downtown Amarillo has long been a place for kids to get out and about. Today the downtown relic received a much needed facelift courtesy of the United Way.

United Way's annual 'Day of Caring' selected the Maverick for this years renovation, sending hundreds of volunteers to re-make the outside of the aging building.

"Instead of maybe playing video games or sitting at home by myself, I had a place to come with my friends," said Joshua Raef, co-chair for the United Way Day of Caring. "We knew it was a safe and great place to fellowship with other kids."

Those in attendance included United Amigo's cashiers, high school students, college students, even Mayor Harpole stopped by to help. It seemed everyone was willing to roll up their sleeves and help.

"This is who I am," said Merry Murguia, Potter County Commissioner. "This is what I do."

"We're just out here for the day of caring," said Daniel Aguirre, Amigo's employee. "Helping our community, just being out here on this nice day."

Renovations included laying wooden chips around the play equipment, along with building a brand new sand volleyball court and garden area.

Kids have not been able to play on the playground outside of the Maverick for quite some time, giving kids coming home from school a welcome Friday surprise.
