Department of Public Safety officials have confirmed that two died in a crash just north of the Canadian bridge on Highway 287.

At approximately 11:12 a.m. a 2011 Ford Mustang was traveling south in the northbound lane of U.S. Highway 287 when it crashed head on with a 2002 Chevrolet pickup traveling north in the northbound lane. The vehicles met on the inside lane of the highway.

The Chevrolet caught on fire and was fully engulfed in flames when Potter County Fire Department responded to the scene to extinguish the fire.

The driver of the Mustang, Melissa A. Flores, 36, of Dumas was pronounced dead at the scene.

Andrew Jared Swope, 27, of Amarillo was driving the pickup. Swope was also pronounced dead at the scene.

Traffic after the wreck had been backed up for approximately two miles.

Both northbound and southbound lanes have been reopened.

DPS is still investigating the crash.
