With the Thanksgiving holiday almost underway, many have started their holiday preparations. While many choose a traditional bird for their turkey day feast, others have opted for a fried turkey this holiday.

Turkey fryers have grown in popularity within that last few years, and with that, many fire departments across the nation have seen an increase in residential kitchen fires. The U.S. Fire Administration stated that over 2,000 fires occurred last year as the result of turkey fryer misuse.

Amarillo Fire Department has offered some tips on how to enjoy a fire-free holiday:

1. Keep the turkey fryer outdoors when preparing the turkey.

2. Cook the turkey on a hard and flat surface. Do not place fryer on grass.

3. Make sure you're not under any kind of overhang, or near any structure.

4. Use the correct amount of oil and make sure you heat oil slowly prior to entering turkey into fryer.

5. Keep propane tank away from an open flam by at least 2 feet.

6. Be sure to thaw and dry out the turkey completely before cooking. Entering an unthawed turkey will create an explosive mix.

7. Under no circumstances should you leave the turkey fryer unattended.

8. Cover any exposed body parts that are subject to splash burns

Amarillo fire stations will be fully staffed and ready for the holiday. Should a fire occur, do not hesitate to dial 9-1-1.
