A state board voted Tuesday to place metal detectors and X-ray machines at the public entrances to the Texas Capitol to deter terrorism, despite objections from Gov. Rick Perry that the devices would create a logjam for visitors.

Gov. Rick Perry and the State Preservation Board gave preliminary approval to two plans for an addition to the fire-damaged Texas Governor's Mansion, including one that would add a small bedroom and bathroom to the private quarters.
