In the span of five months, between May and September , over 100 cases of salmonella have been linked back to the IHOP restaurant at I-40 and Western Street this year.

Today, health investigators say the salmonella strain is a rare one and have called in police to help.

Doctor Rush Pierce, with the city of Amarillo, says in the first two investigations they determined the salmonella is a Group C.

Group C is a strain that researchers and health officials hardly ever see and it's so powerful it clings to surfaces and is more resistant to disinfection.

Pierce believes the third round of cases could be the same strain. Knowing that, Pierce says the salmonella could be coming from inside the IHOP and it's possible someone could intentionally be harming customers.

"We've asked law enforcement to look into this situation" said Pierce. "The Amarillo Police Department is involved in our investigation. We've been in contact with our regional and state health departments."

Doctor Pierce says they are exploring all option as to why this keeps happening, but for now the restaurant will remain closed.

It is important to note that the IHOP at I-40 and Ross is not involved in this investigation in any way.

Give Me A Break...

While I completely agree that there are nasty people that DO NOT need to be serving the public, please don't put this outbreak on ALL employees. I was also an employee and was sick with salmonella for TWO MONTHS. I have three young children who did NOT get salmonella from me, because unlike some of my "fellow" employees-I know the proper hand washing technique and don't need a timer to tell me when to clean my hands. PLEASE HAVE COMMON SENSE if you're working in public and KEEP YOURSELF CLEAN. I don't appreciate the salmonella any more than anyone else and regret ever working for this company. Nothing in my life has been the same since.

I usually do not visit these restaurants that frequently but when I did, which was about a year ago, the bathrooms were very dark and uncomfortable. It was a very unclean feeling that I experienced and even after this time, I still remember. I hope that they decide to burn it down, and hire new employees, and reopen. This is the only way that anyone might return. It just needs to be totally redone and refreshed before it can be trusted for cleanliness.

Um....

If the salmonella contamination is intentional, burning the place down won't work any better than tearing it down would. Duh. Find out if its really intentional, and go after THEM, not the building. THINK before you post a comment next time?

If someone is found to be linked with contaminating food purposely, that person or persons should be prosecuted to the full extent of the law!!! My family ate there one week before it was shutdown, Thank God none of them became ill.
