AMARILLO, TEXAS -- Eight of the most commonly prescribed antibiotics, are now being offered for free (with a prescription) at any United supermarket.

The list of eight includes: Amoxicillin, Ampicillin, Cephalexin, Ciprofloxacin, Doxycycline, Erythromycin, Penicillin, Trimeth/Sulfa.

There are no strings attached If you've been prescribed an antibiotic from your doctor, you will not be charged a dime for the prescription.

"We give them free because it helps the patient. It is something that is not very common, to give out free antibiotics, but we feel the benefit to the patient more than outweighs any cost or expense we have," said Dick Storseth, United Market Street pharmacist.

As far as customer response goes, most folks welcome the good news and the extra cash.

"They're very appreciative -- moms with young kids, or senior adults, the expense is a strain for them, they're thrilled," said Storseth.

For your next doctor's visit, you may want to check the list and see if you can be prescribed that particular antibiotic, or you can call and ask if a substitution may be made with the antibiotic you are currently prescribed. The cost savings may worth the extra leg work.

It is important to keep in mind that these discounts only apply to doctor prescribed antibiotics that are on the list above.
