AMARILLO, TEXAS -- Abstinence only education programs, like Worth the Wait could be losing primary grants, and organizations like the Texas Panhandle Family Planning and Health Centers could see an increase in their budget.
President Obama announced this week his newest budget which would redirect nearly $110 million into a new teen pregnancy prevention initiative
Worth the Wait told Pronews 7 that their programs are effective and important to our community.
Executive Director Amy Christie said, reducing funding to those programs, "will affect the Panhandle greatly. Worth the Wait is in 30 different schools, 10 different districts and 8 different counties across the Texas Panhandle so we serve altogether 1700 kids with our program."
Christina Paullus of the Texas Panhandle Family Planning and Health Centers said they could be seeing an increase from these funds, and for their program, the money is long overdue.
"The Family Planning increase for Title ten, that $10 million increase, would be filtered down through the State and at this time I'm not sure how that would affect us here locally. Overall for Family Planning it's very promising, and very long overdue for Title ten program increase."
