AMARILLO -- The City of Amarillo is working hard to combat the cold weather and horrible road conditions by putting down a small layer of sand and rock salt on the roads.

Due to the rain, they don't put too much treatment down because it will just wash away. As soon as the ice sets in, they have a supply of  "melt down” which they load onto smaller trucks.

The substance works great on the concrete over passes, making it safer for commuters. They also blend rock salt and sand into large trucks and apply it to roads to make the roads a little bit easier to drive on.

“To treat the roads a couple times for a storm, we'll use one of these bins full of salt and sand mixture,” said Mike Mitchell, Amarillo street superintendent.  “Then it kind of depends on the temperature how long it lasts, we'll just keep adding it as needed until we get the roads safe and they dry out,” he said.

Mitchell also said they have a crew coming in at 8 p.m. Monday, Dec. 10, so they will be ready for whatever the weather brings in on Tuesday.

Holiday travelers might be concerned about flying within the next couple of days.

Rick Husband International airport manager Scott Carr said he hasn't heard of any flight delays as of now.

He also said the airport has an internal and external sensor which monitors the runways, so they are prepared for the coming icy conditions.
