Affidavit: `Baby Grace' was beaten with belts, held under water, thrown across room by hair

Friday, December 28, 2007 at 4:10 p.m.

GALVESTON, Texas (AP) - A 2-year-old girl whose body was found in Galveston Bay was beaten by her mother and stepfather with leather belts, held under water, and grabbed by her hair and flung her across a room onto a tile floor, according to a search warrant affidavit.

The affidavit released Thursday said Riley Ann Sawyers' stepfather placed the girl's body in a bathtub, covered her with a purple towel and shut the shower curtain so her mother couldn't see her dead child.

The stepfather, Royce Clyde Zeigler II, 24, and Riley's mother, Kimberly Dawn Trenor, 19, have been indicted on capital murder charges. Prosecutors have not decided whether to seek the death penalty.

Zeigler's attorney, Neal Davis III, said the affidavit is based on information Trenor gave police and that her credibility will be challenged at trial.

Trenor told police the beating was a discipline session that went awry because the toddler didn't remember to say "please," and "yes, sir" to her stepfather. Davis has denied the account.

Authorities say Zeigler and Trenor stuffed Riley's body in a plastic container and hid it inside a storage shed at the house for up to two months before dumping it in Galveston Bay.

The box washed ashore and was found by a fisherman in October. Authorities dubbed Riley "Baby Grace" as they spent weeks searching for her identity and family.

The affidavit said investigators searched for the shower curtain, the bath towel and other evidence in a rented storage unit and the Spring residence of Trenor and Zeigler.

They recovered the shower curtain, a desktop computer, a box containing notebook pads and paper, digital images, a bathtub slip mat, files, the contents of a dryer lint trap and bathroom sink pipes, the affidavit said.

Items the investigators were looking for but didn't find were a shovel, bleach, trash bags, latex gloves, concrete mix and other goods. Trenor told police those items were used to dispose of the body.

Davis said his own investigation of the home did not turn up any evidence to support Trenor's claim that Zeigler picked up Riley by the hair and threw her across the room.

"There is no evidence to corroborate this story of a towel being draped over her face," he said.

So awful I cried

Posted by Jenny B, Marquette - Tuesday, January 27, 2009 at 10:03 p.m.

I read that she was still reaching out to her mother crying I LOVE YOU during the torture and beatings. What kind of mother does/lets this happen to her child. No matter how mad you are. I hope she and the male get what they deserve while in prison. She was such a beautiful little girl and this should have never happened. My heart goes out to the grandparents who have to vision this happening to their little sweetheart every day.

sad

this is the saddest story i have ever heard of. I cannot believe that somebody could ever treat a young child like that especially because she didnt say please or yes sir to her stepfather, she was a young girl and that is unacceptable and those parents should be ashamed of themselves for doing that to their child!

No one heard anything?

I am very surprised that if this poor child was beaten and I am not saying she was not, but what I am trying to say if there was such violence in that house that day, wouldn't the neighbors have heard the commotion and better yet smelled the rotting remains of this little angel?

I just don't understand how noone has come forth to say anything of the noise or smell.

sorry

I just feel so sorry for her dad and the rest of her family. I have 2 small children and this just breaks my heart. Doing something that awful just because a child forgot to say please and yes sir. My prayers are with the family.

What is the world comming to

As mothers (no matter of age) it is our job and responsiblity to protect our children not put them in harms way. The last few years there has been so many babies dying at there mother's hand. If a woman knows she can't protect her child she to think of other options that will instead of killing them or letting them be killed by the hand of her man. So many people are unforatunate to bear children. So many women put there man first. The one thing they don't realize is these children didn't ask to be born. We all now the out come of sexual intercourse so these women need to think because it's you that's letting your child down. Nothing is stronger than a mother's love and that's all our children have.

Texas Parents are notorious for murdering their children.

I cannot even begin to understand why anyone would brutalize a child like this. And I wonder why the prosecution would even have to think about a decision on pushing for the death penalty. It should be a no brainer, justice must be done for this little girl.

Texas parents seem to be notorious for murdering their children, maybe we should have all native Texans get a mental eval at the time of birth of their children.

why

The mother and the stepfather should been beaten, grabbed by the hair and thrown to the floor!! the will get what they deserve in prison if not the death sentence.

Mandatory

I can't beleive the Prosecution has to "decide" whether or not to seek the death penalty...any time an innocent child is murdered at the hand of anyone, especially a PARENT...should be mandatory death. To hell with what's humane and what isn't. We have become so lax in what justice means, that people are basically getting away with murder. Where is the justice for this child? She never had a chance...and when they are ready to pull the switch, make sure you make him say "please".

How Sad

They need to be locked up and the key thrown away...They should also do what they did to that little girl...Beat them until they are purple and black and blue then hold them under water...The mother should of stepped in and help her child, but some ppl just can't see that...I don't care what anyone says, at 2 they should ty but they don't understand what yes sir or maam means...Come on ppl, take responsability for this....

THE PRENTS OF BABY GRACE SHOULD HAVE APPRECIAETED THE PRECIOUS GIFT THAT GOD HAD GIVEN THEM /AND NOT HAD TO TAKE HER LIFE.FOR GOD WILL PUNISH THEM IN HIS WAY.THEY SHOULD HAVE THOUGHT BACK WHEN THEY WERE AT THE AGE OF TWO YEARS OF AGE.AND IF THEY NEEDED HELP THEY SHOULD OF FOUND IT.FOR NOW THEY HAVE RUINED THEIR LIVES.I HOPE THEY ARE THINKING VERY HARD ABOUT WHAT THEY HAVE DONE/AND ARE VERY SORRY ABOUT IT. FOR I HOPE THEY ASK GOD FORGIVENESS.

why??

How could a parent kill there own kid. You brought them into this world..it sure does not mean u can take them out as the quote goes. How could they even have the nerve to not stop after they realized she was dieing..Why didnt they even get her medical help to see if she could live. i mean chances are she probably wouldnt have lived but they could have tried that is one sad family right there...and i hope they get the death penalty for that hatred crime they didn =[[[[

Very Sad

When I first read about the little girl it just broke my heart knowing that there are so many people in this world who have no natural feeling for another human. This poor baby girl had to endure so much from these two monsters, but they will get theirs in the end. At least now this Baby girl is in God's memory and is asleep awaiting his grand promise of a resurrection in a paradise to come. Where there will be no more pain or death, just God’s righteous people who love him and want to serve him. May this baby girl sleep in peace now and wait to hear those words to wake up. She will then be in a peaceful environment and not have to worry that she will be harmed again.

Death penalty

Posted by Sonia Soto, amarillo - Friday, December 28, 2007 at 10:54 p.m.

They deserve the death penalty!!! I dont care what anyone else says, I hate to read these types of things...the things this poor baby must have gone through. Her parents didnt have a 'heart"..what type of people do this to their children to "discpline" them?? My god, she was only 2..probably not even potty trained yet..this makes me sick...I pray that they get the death penalty. i doubt they feel bad for what they did.

For all the helpless children

Posted by suzie aufl., pampa tx. - Friday, December 28, 2007 at 10:01 p.m.

No child deserves to be abused and beaten. For all the people out there who think that it is ok, just remember that carma will eventually catch up to you in a big way. If not now it will the day you all meet you maker!! Don't any of you ever forget that. May your poor soul rest in peace Baby Grace . Your in Gods hands now and no can hurt you anymore.

Why Do people do this?

Posted by c h, KV - Friday, December 28, 2007 at 4:44 p.m.

people who could commit these acts on defenseless little children don't deserve to live!
