AMARILLO, TEXAS -- Beta Sigma Phi, a city wide women's social organization, honored Amarillo Mayor Debra McCartt, as their 2009 "Woman of the Year."
Beta Sigma Phi has 18 chapters locally with nearly 250 members, and have been honoring Amarillo women with the award since the nineteen forties.
Recipients of the award are women outside of the sorority that haveĀ given outstanding service to the community.
"I really am proud to be considered by Beta Sigma Phi, and again I'm so proud of the women, what they have done for this community and the outstanding contributions that they have made and to be honored for my service and for what I do is really special for me," said Mayor McCartt.
As well as honoring a woman of the year, Beta Sigma Phi helps raise funds for local charities each year, this year's project is the Ronald McDonald House.
