CLOVIS, N.M. -- The Clovis Municipal Schools Education Foundation has awarded five grants for teachers and students of Clovis Schools.

Clovis teachers submitted thirteen grant requests. That is the largest number of requests since the Foundation began awarding the grants in 2007.

The first presentation was to Silvia Miranda, a 2nd grade teacher at Lockwood Elementary School. Her grant will enhance their bilingual program and increase awareness of the importance of knowing two or more languages by interviewing professional business people, researching and writing narratives about careers, then organizing a Career Fair.

Another grant was awarded to Steven Stull of Yucca Middle School for a thematic unit that will incorporate Science, History, Math, and English. His 8th grade students will

conduct research on the Lewis and Clark Expedition, create a scrapbook, build detailed maps and timelines, and make scientific journal entries. Then, the students will reenact the Lewis and Clark expedition based on their research when they go on a field trip to Palo Duro Canyon.

Rene Hedemann, the Gifted and Talented teacher for both Zia and Highland Elementary Schools was awarded a grant that will provide both schools the opportunity to design, build, and operate robots.

And finally, Kristin Ardis was awarded a grant that will benefit all the students and teachers at Mesa Elementary School. netTrekker is a search tool that provides access to

more than 300,000 educator-selected digital resources, which are organized by grade and reading level, thus allowing students to navigate content with confidence, and providing additional instructional resources for teachers.

The Clovis Municipal Schools Education Foundation is totally supported through the donations of individuals who care about Clovis Schools and desire to participate

financially. If anyone would like to be a part of this exciting program, please contact Gayla Brumfield or Holly Stockstill at 769-1951
