(AP) -- SANTA FE, N.M. (AP) - A winter storm with strong winds has been blamed for the deaths of two people in traffic accidents and a power outage for 4,800 customers of Public Service Company of New Mexico in Santa Fe.
The state was hit by heavy snow - more than a foot in some areas - and strong winds. Travel is difficult and dangerous, with conditions expected to worsen in some areas Tuesday. The National Weather Service reports blizzard warnings for areas west of Socorro and around Moriarty.
Public Service Company of New Mexico spokesman Don Brown said Tuesday 4,800 utility customers were without power after strong winds and ice knocked down power lines.
Some PNM customers could be without power until 4 p.m. or later, Brown said.
Extra crews have been called in from Albuquerque and will work to restore power in phases throughout the day.
The main affected area runs from Las Campanas in the north to Agua Fria on the south side. It runs from Santa Fe County Road 70-A on the eastern boundary west to Caja del Rio.
Brown says there are dozens of other small outages across town.
On Monday, weather played a role in a fatal crash on U.S. 550 in Sandoval County. Authorities say 59-year-old Jimmy Shendo of Jemez Pueblo was driving a pickup truck when he lost control and slid into the path of a tractor-trailer.
Slick roads also are blamed in the death of an unidentified 57-year-old woman from Dallas struck by a truck on a narrow road in the Santa Fe foothills.
