After much debate and public comment, Amarillo has a new sign ordinance

AMARILLO, TEXAS -- After much debate and public comment, the city of Amarillo has new regulations when it comes to signs. Amarillo commissioners passed a new sign ordinance on Tuesday.

After listening to public comment in 3 separate public hearings, commissioners made several amendments to the proposed ordinance before passing it.

City officials admit the sign ordinance is not perfect, and believe the ordinance will need tweaking as time goes by. Mayor McCartt feels that passing the ordinance today was the right move to get the ball rolling.

"We know how important signs are for them and to them, but we had to address it, and we had to make some sort of an ordinance to get going to make sure we addressed the concerns of this community," said Mayor Debra McCartt.

The existing sign ordinance dated back to the sixties, and did not address new technologies among other perceived problems like spacing, height, and size of signs.
