The health department says the shots are "recommended for all people who want to reduce the risk of becoming ill with influenza and transmitting the flu to others." Groups that are highly recommended to get the shot are pregnant women, children 6 months to 2 years of age, people age 5 through age 64 with high-risk health condition, health care workers who provide direct patient care and those who are in close contact with infants 6 months or younger.

With supplies increasing, Texas health officials are now urging providers to offer the vaccine to the general population but to continue to ensure people in priority groups get the vaccine.
