AMARILLO,TEXAS -- Last year, the High Plains Food Bank handed out more than 4.8 million pounds of food. Today, they say they have to increase that number up to five and a half million pounds.
The food bank unveiled a recent study today on hunger across the Panhandle with some alarming statistics. More than 42,000 people need the food bank every year, with 40% being children.
Director Janie Singleton says accept it or not, hunger is a problem here. "I want people to take away with them that people in the Texas Panhandle are hungry. There are little children going to bed on an empty stomach because they haven't had any dinner. A lot of people not only don't want to hear about people being hungry, they just don't want to face it because it makes them uncomfortable. That's not something we all want to talk about, but maybe it's time we got a little uncomfortable and realize our neighbors need us."
Just last month, the food bank handed out more than 400,000 pounds of food.If you would like to help out click here High Plains Food Bank.
