HEREFORD,TEXAS -- A 16-month-old toddler, who was taken to the Hereford Regional Medical Center with life-threatening injuries, is now off a respirator and eating on his own, according to the Hereford Brand. On Friday, the little boy's condition was upgraded to stable.
The child, was transported via helicopter to a children's hospital in Lubbock on February, 10. The toddler had severe injuries, including a fractured skull,broken leg, and lacerated liver the injuries are believed to have been caused by severe beatings, according to police reports.
The boy's father, 22-year-old Salvador Gonzales Jr., remains in custody in the Deaf Smith County jail on a $50,000 bond and faces a felony charge of injury to a child.
The mother, 19-year-old Angelica Porras, is also in custody on a no-bond hold for violation of parole from a previous forgery conviction.
According to police reports, Gonzales, has acknowledged his role in the child's injuries. The father, had originally told police that his son was beaten by unknown assailants who "jumped" him as he was walking down the street carrying the child.
A search of the family home uncovered evidence of marijuana use as well as items, such as a black leather belt, police believe was used to hurt the child.
