RATON, N.M. (AP) - A group hoping to open a $50 million racetrack and casino in Raton has filed an appeal of the New Mexico Gaming Control Board's decision to revoke its gambling license.
The board acted May 4, saying the developer for La Mesa Racetrack and Casino had missed a deadline to operate a temporary casino.
La Mesa officials say in their appeal they addressed concerns expressed by the Gaming Control Board.
La Mesa attorney Sam Bregman says the group never received due process. He says the board showed "complete disregard for what's in the best interests of the state."
Developer Michael Moldenhauer says he won't give up on Raton. He says hundreds of residents are counting on jobs from the proposed racetrack.
