MESQUITE, Texas (AP) - Police say a gunman who allegedly tried to rob people at a party in the Dallas area killed one person who tried to stop him before being fatally shot by someone else.

Mesquite police say the deaths of both men early Tuesday are under investigation. Names of the victim and the alleged gunman were not immediately released.

Lt. Bill Hedgpeth says police responded to a report of a shooting at an apartment complex. Witnesses told police that an unidentified man arrived, flashed a gun and tried to rob the party-goers.

Hedgpeth says a 35-year old Mesquite man who struggled with the suspect was shot and killed. Police say another man at the party then fatally shot the gunman.

Police were interviewing the man who shot and killed the suspect.
