AMARILLO, TEXAS -- It's the talk of the nation. Parts of Arizona's controversial immigration law went into effect Thursday.
Protestors have filled the city of Phoenix, while the state's governor asks for an appeals court to lift a judge's order blocking the most controversial parts.
Now a Republican State Rep. wants to introduce similar legislation here in Texas. State Rep. Debbie Riddle from Tomball, is pushing for that legislation and will introduce it during January's legislative session.
Local lawmaker John Smithee says he is for legislation that will address the immigration problem, and better protect Texas citizens.
"The federal government have simply said we don't care so it puts us in a very difficult position here in Texas it puts our citizens at risk, it puts our budget at risk and we have got to do something," said State Rep. Smithee.
He also said he believes a lot of people are misunderstanding Arizona's law. It's really not that unreasonable he says, especially when farmers and ranchers are being brutally murdered across the border, and drugs are being introduced into our schools from across the border.
