AMARILLO, Texas (AP) - Investigators in the Amarillo area are trying to determine what led to the fatal shooting of a woman by a man who later was shot and killed by a Potter County sheriff's deputy.

Sheriff Brian Thomas says the gunfire took place Tuesday night. Authorities are trying to determine the relationship between the two people who died.

Thomas says the deputy shot and killed the man near Bushland, around 9:30 p.m. Tuesday. The suspect allegedly had tried to abduct a girl at a truck stop west of Amarillo. ProNews 7 has confirmed that truck was at the Love's truck stop west of Amarillo.

Investigators say the suspect struggled with the girl's grandmother before shooting the woman, who later died.

The deputy who shot the gunman has been placed on administrative leave.

ProNews 7 spoke with Potter County Chief Deputy Roger Short who told us the county will be releasing more information later this morning. We of course will keep you updated on the incident and bring you any new information as it is made available.
