CLOVIS, N.M. (AP) - A Clovis woman is dead and another critically injured after a car crash involving a city police officer.

Police officials told the Clovis News Journal that the officer was on routine patrol Wednesday night and apparently ran a stop sign.

They say the accident is being investigated by the department and will be reviewed by the 9th Judicial District Attorney's Office.

Authorities said 56-year-old Mary Castillo died Thursday afternoon from her injuries at University Hospital in Lubbock, Texas.

Castillo was a passenger in the car driven by 40-year-old Edith Payton of Clovis. Authorities say Payton remains in critical condition at the Lubbock hospital.

The police officer was treated at a hospital for minor injuries and released.
