VEGA, TEXAS -- UPDATE: Around two Monday afternoon a fire started from Interstate-40 jumped the median and went across into a field and spread from there.

In the end more than 900 acres were burned.

Oldham County Judge Don Allred says without the help of Deaf Smith and Potter County fire units, the damage could have been much worse.

The fire did threaten two structures but they were fortunately able to save them.

EARLIER: If you looked west of Amarillo Monday and saw what you thought was smoke, well you were right.

There was a grass fire in Oldham County with large billows of smoke.

Around 2 p.m. Monday afternoon there were multiple hands on deck from surrounding fire departments to help extenguish the blaze.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation and we will bring you more information as it becomes available to us.
