AMARILLO, TEXAS -- An Amarillo woman was transported to a hospital after police say she fell victim to road rage.

It was Thursday night when police say Angie Chavarria possibly cut off a vehicle as she pulled in to get gas at Sam's Club. A verbal altercation then ensued with Chavarria and the driver of the other vehicle, Michael Hart, 36.

Chavarria then left Sam's with her teenage daughter as a passenger in their Honda CRV. Police say Hart apparently followed the vehicle on I-40 at about 9 p.m. in his Ford Escort. In Hart's car, were his wife and children.

Witnesses tell police Hart pulled beside Chavarria's car and escalated the verbal altercation. According to the incident report, Hart's car swerved into the Honda, striking its passenger side. The Honda then lost control and rolled into a traffic sign and a tree just before the Crockett exit on I-40.

Police say Hart then left the scene. Chavarria was transported to a local hospital with life threatening injuries. Her daughter sustained only minor injuries.

Hart contacted the Amarillo Emergency Communications Center to report his involvement in an accident. Police then went to his location and took him to the police department. No one was hurt in his vehicle.

He was later booked into the Potter County Jail for Aggravated Assault.

During the investigation, Interstate 40, was shut down to one lane of traffic and other minor traffic accidents occurred in the area during the investigation..

Police say a witness provided information for the investigation. If you were one of the people who saw this event, police want to speak to you. Please contact Amarillo Police at 378-3038 or Crime Stoppers at 374-4400.
