Many churches have been doing it for months.

But Thursday, several churches set up an event to harness the power.

The Panhandle's drought had many people turning to the power of prayer.

One by one, Christians gathered at the cross in Groom to pray for rain.

"The rain that's missing in the Texas Panhandle is causing such a severe need in the community for farmers and people that are in agriculture," said D. Martinez, a member of the Cross Ministry Prayer Team in Groom. "It's a devastating effect,"

"I'm praying for rain, not only because of the wildfires and how dry it is now, but for the economy, for the lakes, the streams," said Hoss Lewman, who drove from Amarillo to be part of the group who was praying for rain. "They all need to be filled back up,"

It's those conditions that have wreaked havoc across the area. The grass is dry and brittle and the ground is cracked. So they prayed for divine drought intervention.

"The Lord says if we humble ourselves and pray that he'll answer our prayers," said Paula Brock, who drove from Pampa to be in Groom. "So I'm here to pray for rain and I believe the Lord will answer if we ask."

Those prayers need answering because without rain the extreme fire danger and drought persists, but there was no doubt the prayers will be answered.

"Approximately 10 years ago, we were having similar circumstances and we prayed for rain and we had a record rainfall that year," said Martinez.

More than 100 Christians were praying and worshiping together. They ended the service holding hands in a circle around the cross.
