It's often said that a dog is man's best friend. A dog can serve as a companion and almost always shows unconditional love.

If you're looking to get a best friend, there is no better time than now. Two Amarillo shelters are open and ready to help you adopt a new 'best friend.'

It's a sad statistic, but Animal Control in Amarillo is forced to euthanize pets on a regular basis. On average, it puts about 10,500 pets to sleep every year, officials told Pronews 7.

On the other hand, about 2,500 pets are adopted every year from neighboring Amarillo-Panhandle Humane Society. It's good news for those pets who are just searching for a companion.

At the Amarillo SPCA, about 10 to 15 dogs are adopted every week. A representative of the no-kill shelter said adoptions have been extremely slow in the last few weeks.

If you're looking to adopt a pet and make a new best friend, now is the time. The Amarillo-Panhandle Humane Society is located at 3501 South Osage and the Amarillo SPCA is at 11901 South Coulter.

And of course, you can help the cause by "liking" Pronews 7's Facebook page. When we hit 11,000 fans, we will donate $1000 to the Amarillo SPCA.
