CANYON, TEXAS -- Two hikers are home safe after Texas Department of Public Safety aircraft flew in with rescue personnel and got the hikers to safety.
At approximately 6 p.m. Tuesday DPS was notified that two hikers had become stranded in the Palo Duro Canyon.
According to reports two 20-year-old males were biking in the canyon when they decided to hike up to the canyon rim.
As it became later in the evening, they decided to descend back into the canyon, but they couldn't locate their exit point, and fell into a position from from which they couldn't safely move.
The hikers were able to make a cell phone call to the Randall County Sheriff's Office for help.
The DPS helicopter along with a tactical flight officer from Amarillo Police Department flew personnel from Canyon Fire Department and the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department to the hiker's location.
"We were able to land on top, unload the equipment and personnel, the victims were about fifty feet down a cliff and we were able to repel down to them, lift them to the top of the canyon and load them into the helicopter and airlift them out to the amphitheater," said Ltn. Volunteer Canyon Firefighter, Matt Stockstill.
Both hikers were treated by a BSA ambulance, but neither was taken to the hospital.
