AMARILLO, TEXAS -- One person is dead and another is in critical condition after a pickup driver struck them west of Amarillo Thursday afternoon, Texas Department of Public Safety said.

The wreck, according to DPS Trooper Gabe Medrano, happened on the frontage road to Interstate 40 near Hope Road. He said two bicyclists were headed westbound on the road and a Toyota Tundra was approaching them from behind.

Trooper Medrano said it's possible the driver, 78-year-old Ernest Latta of Amarillo, didn't see the bikes because of the sun. Latta struck the bikes from behind, DPS said.

David C. Isom, 46, was pronounced dead on scene. His wife, Anna R. Isom remains in critical condition at Northwest Texas Hospital.

Both were wearing helmets, DPS said.
