AMARILLO, TEXAS -- Wind gusts of up to 68 miles per hour caused damage throughout the city of Amarillo Sunday.
The fire that began at Chicken Creek on Saturday was contained by firefighters Sunday morning, only to spark up again Sunday afternoon. The Texas Forest Service then worked on putting out the hot spots.
Signs were torn from poles and roofs were blown off of houses.
Amarillo did see a little bit of rain Sunday afternoon, but not enough to guarantee no more fires.
"Since the grasses are dormant, they don't really soak up any of that moisture so, yeah, the soil moisture may be ok," National Weather Service Meteorologist Lance Govhring said. "But, unfortunately, within just about a week or so after rain or snow, sometimes we can see wildfires again."
Officials are asking everyone to remain cautious: do not throw cigarette butts out the window, try to keep from driving on grass and be aware when using fire as a source.
