AMARILLO, TEXAS -- Sam Houston Middle School took a step back in time to welcome in an event to get the whole school engaged in reading.
It's called, "Read It Forward".
Starting Thursday, 245 copies of the book, "Schooled" by Gordon Korman, were placed around the school for teachers and students to find.
Officials say there are about 900 people in the school, so after reading, they're encouraged to pass the book to someone else.
The teachers even dressed the part, as hippies, to kick the event off.
Something officials say they need with the stresses of the STAAR.
"Right now, we are all stressed out because of the testing that's coming up. We've got a new STAAR test, we don't know what to expect and so teachers really expect a lot out of themselves and this is a fun way for us to change that, for us as a faculty and student body to get to do something fun together," said Kayla Middleton, Sam Houston Librarian.
The faculty and students on campus are divided into three teams, 6th, 7th, and 8th grade, teams.
At the end of 12 weeks, the grade with the most participants will win a tie-dye party.
