AMARILLO, TEXAS -- You've heard from some experts gas will hit $5.00 a gallon by summertime.

So, we're all trying different things to ease the pain.

One of those things is driving something that's more fuel efficient, and we're explaining how that's affecting car sales.

In Texas, we're known for our super-sized SUV's. But as gas prices climb, so do the costs of driving one.

Because of that, the newest trend and money saver is driving a hybrid.

"We are seeing a movement in that direction. There's a large interest in moving toward a more economically vehicle, with good gas mileage, comfortable and extremely safe and reliable,"said Gus Shamir, Street Toyota Sales Manager.

"It's hard to spend 100 dollars to fill up your gas tank or 150 it's hard on every pocket," said Shamir.

He says Street Toyota has several hybrid choices, from the Prius, to their newest V and C models, to the hybrid Highlander and Camry, vehicles that say they get up to 50 miles a gallon.

Shamir says he's seeing a huge demand for these fuel-efficient vehicles and right now, they're trying to keep up with it.

Used car dealerships say every year they see the same trend right before summer gas prices soar.

But if you're not looking to trade, there are several things you can do to help your fuel mileage.

"Make sure your tire pressure is where it needs to be, make sure that you have your vehicle maintained and your service is done on time and keep it in good running conditions."

Good tips if you're pinching your pennies, and looking for ways to endure the pinch at the pump.

Currently, AAA says the average price for gas in Amarillo is $3.41.

Some other tips, ease off the gas pedal, change your air filter, and lighten your load.
