HARTLEY COUNTY, TEXAS -- Two people were killed Wednesday evening in a single-vehicle crash south of Dalhart.

Texas Department of Public Safety said 76-year-old Fernando Chavez was driving a 1998 Ford pickup on US 54 about 14 miles south of Dalhart when his vehicle veered of the road to the right. Chavez then overcorrected the pickup back onto the road which caused it to overturn, DPS said.

Chavez was not wearing his seat belt, according to DPS. He was airlifted to Northwest Texas Hospital in Amarillo where he was pronounced dead.

A passenger of the vehicle, 26-year-old Maria Villalba was wearing her seat belt. She was pronounced dead at the scene, DPS said.
