AMARILLO, TEXAS -- Residents in Southwest Amarillo will soon be driving on smooth roads thanks to Amarillo city commissioners.

They approved a $2.3 million project Tuesday to completely repave Hillside Road and SW 58th Avenue between Bell and Georgia.  The existing pavement and its base will be removed, and then a new base and new pavement section will be installed.  Funding for the project came from the Street Department Capital Improvement Program budget.

"There's a list and that's from the moneys that were being created from this extra tax that we added last year," Amarillo City Commissioner Jim Simms said.  "We dedicated it to street repair and that's what it'll be spent for."

Simms pointed out the construction will take place in segments so Hillside and 58th will not have to be completely shut down.

Commissioners also approved nearly $57,000 worth of tasers for the Amarillo Police Department.  Simms said the commission provides about 50 tasers for APD every year.

"They wear out and they become dated," he said.  "And newer technology helps us, you know, stay up with our equipment.  And, of course, I'm a huge fan of tasers as opposed to using live ammunition."

And $324,000 was approved to install the SCADA system for the Potter County Wellfield.  The system will provide the necessary communications and remote units to monitor and control the wellfield from Amarillo.
