LAS VEGAS (AP) - President Barack Obama travels to New Mexico today to promote his energy plan. This afternoon Obama will travel to oil and gas production fields located on federal lands outside of Maljamar, N.M. The area is home to more than 70 active drilling rigs. While there, the president will speak about his commitment to expanding domestic oil and gas production. Obama is also visiting Nevada and Oklahoma today.
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) - Getting a high school diploma in New Mexico is about to get a little harder. KOB-TV reports that for the first time, students are taking the New Mexico High School Graduation Assessment exam. The new test replaces a former exam that tested high school students' skills at an eighth grade level. Students are now held to college level standards.
GALLUP, N.M. (AP) - A second New Mexico man has been arrested in connection with a series of shootings that sparked hysteria and led a group of men to arm themselves and patrol Gallup. The Gallup Independent reports that Mika-John Lowley of Church Rock is suspected in two of the four shootings on March 12. Lowley allegedly used a BB gun to shoot a man pumping gas after the man refused to give him money. Police say Lowley then shot another man in a casino parking lot. Both victims were treated at local hospitals that night and were released.
TSE BONITO, N.M. (AP) - The Navajo Nation has unveiled an $18 million complex for the tribe's Department of Transportation. About 250 people attended the ceremony yesterday in Tse (Say) Bonito near the Arizona-New Mexico border. The complex also includes an office for the Navajo Code Talkers Foundation. The group is working to raise money for a museum and veterans center.
