BOISE, Idaho (AP) - Idaho professional cyclist Kristin Armstrong beat the competition by more than two minutes to win the first stage of New Mexico's Tour of the Gila. Armstrong won yesterday's hilltop finish in 3 hours, 15 minutes, 39 seconds, after a breakaway. Today's second stage is a 64-mile ride straddling the Continental Divide.
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) - Las Cruces businessman Greg Sowards has picked up an endorsement from tea party favorite U.S. Sen. Rand Paul in his bid to represent New Mexico in the U.S. Senate. Sowards is running against former Congresswoman Heather Wilson for the GOP nomination for a Senate seat being vacated by Democrat Jeff Bingaman.
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) - A former assistant professor at the New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology has sued the school, saying he was wrongfully fired because of his disability. The Albuquerque Journal reports Andrew Budek-Schmeisser's lawsuit claims the school refused his request that it modify doors and have an assistant hand out papers in class after he began using a wheelchair.
ALAMOGORDO, N.M. (AP) - Authorities in Alamogordo have arrested a 55-year-old man who they say strangled his dog. Ronnie Chavez was arrested Tuesday after by officers responding to a report of a man choking a large dog and finding the animal dead on the sidewalk.
