FARMINGTON, N.M. (AP) - The federal government is being sued by environmentalists over approval of a permit to expand a coal mine in northwestern New Mexico. The suit the approval of a 714-acre expansion at BHP Billiton's Navajo Coal Mine and its claim that the mine hasn't caused health and environmental impacts. An agency spokesman says the Office of Surface Mining has followed the permitting process to the letter. The mine feeds the nearby Four Corners Power Plant.
SANTA FE, N.M. (AP) - Elected members of the Public Regulation Commission are discussing whether they should seek a restraining order to ban one taxpayer from their public meetings. Las Cruces Sun-News reports that PRC chairman Patrick Lyons wanted to obtain a court order to prevent Martin de la Garza from attending and speaking at the agency's twice-weekly meetings.
ANTHONY, N.M. (AP) - About 400 residents of the tiny New Mexico border town of Anthony have signed a petition demanding that local law enforcement officers stop random immigration checks. The signatures were delivered to the city council last evening following a march through the town along the Texas-New Mexico border.
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) - Police say at least one of the two bodies found at an Albuquerque home shows trauma consistent with homicide. The bodies were discovered Tuesday and it appears the victims had been dead for several days. The genders of the victims and other details haven't been disclosed.
