LAREDO, Texas (AP) - A South Texas man has admitted writing more than $225,000 worth of unauthorized checks from a Border Patrol union account. No sentencing date has been set for 36-year-old Pedro Palacios of San Antonio. Authorities say Palacios was hired by his father-in-law to repair a union computer and used the opportunity to steal the checks.
JASPER, Texas (AP) - The first black police chief of an East Texas town has been fired over poor job performance. The Jasper City Council last night dismissed Chief Rodney Pearson. A council member who voted against the dismissal called it "racism at its finest."
GALVESTON, Texas (AP) - More than 120 dolphins have turned up stranded in Texas since last fall and researchers want to know why. The Houston Chronicle reports that experts are looking at the 2010 BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, an algae bloom or other unknown causes. Officials say the dolphins were stranded in Galveston, Aransas, Calhoun, Kleberg and Brazoria counties.
FORT HOOD, Texas (AP) - The last U.S. military vehicle that crossed the border when troops withdrew from Iraq last year will go on display at Fort Hood. The mine-resistant vehicle is set to be unveiled at a dedication ceremony this morning. Soldiers who drove the vehicle out of Iraq will be on hand to talk about their experiences.
