CORRALES, N.M. (AP) - Smoke rises from the wooded area along the Rio Grande on the northern edge of Albuquerque as crews work to put out flames burning on both sides of the river. Last night the Romero Fire was declared 70 percent contained on the west side of the river. Crews were working to contain the flames on the east side and said the fire was moving away from homes but was zero percent contained.
SANTA FE, N.M. (AP) - Investigators say an illegal abandoned campfire caused a wildfire this week in northwestern New Mexico that charred more than 350 acres and destroyed five homes and 12 outbuildings. Officials say the fire near the community of Blanco was on land operated by the state Game and Fish Department.
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) - A state judge in Albuquerque has ruled a website that authorities say two aging professors used to run a multistate prostitution ring is legal. The ruling comes as prosecutors are scheduled to present to a grand jury their case against former University of New Mexico President F. Chris Garcia, who is accused of helping a physics professor from New Jersey oversee a prostitution website.
SANTA FE, N.M. (AP) - Attorney General Gary King says the state is responsible for paying to furnish a new district courthouse in Santa Fe. The state Board of Finance is to consider a request today from the 1st Judicial District for an $827,000 loan for furnishings that court officials say is needed for judges to move into the $60 million courthouse in January.
