TRUTH OR CONSEQUENCES, N.M. (AP) - New Mexico State Police and a special prosecutor are investigating the relationship between a 29-year-old former Truth or Consequences police officer and a 15-year-old girl, who married last month. The Albuquerque Journal reports that Noah Pestak (PEHS'-tak) could face a statutory rape charge because the girl was pregnant when they married.
SANTA FE, N.M. (AP) - Santa Fe has extended an agreement with a security company for its city buildings despite the firm's higher cost. The Santa Fe City Council recently voted 5-1 to renew a contract with Chavez Security for a second year even though the deal will cost half a million dollars more than bids from other companies. Council members say the company received the contract through a fair process.
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) - Authorities are looking into how an off-duty sheriff's deputy lost his gun in the maternity ward of an Albuquerque hospital. Presbyterian Hospital spokeswoman Elizabeth Brophy told KOB-TV that a physician found the gun after the Bernalillo County deputy apparently lost it in a men's room. Firearms are banned on hospital property.
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) - Gov. Susan Martinez is slated to address leaders of the state's colleges and universities today, just days after a new report said they are some of the most underperforming nationwide. Martinez is scheduled to speak at the Central New Mexico Community College-Workforce Training Center, and is expected to urge regents and administrators to develop a new plan aimed at fixing state colleges.
