HOUSTON (AP) - The punishment phase in the trial of a retired firefighter convicted of shooting his unarmed neighbor to death is set to resume today in Houston. Attorneys for 46-year-old Raul Rodriguez are prepared to present witnesses. Rodriguez argued he was within his rights under Texas' version of a stand-your-ground law when he killed Kelly Danaher in 2010.
CLEVELAND, Texas (AP) - Two people have drowned in a canoeing accident during a religious retreat in Southeast Texas. The San Jacinto County Sheriff's Office says the bodies were recovered yesterday from a small lake near Cleveland. The victims have been identified as 15-year-old Lewis Berrios and 21-year-old Solero Neftal.
FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) - Temperatures in the Dallas-Fort Worth area reached the triple digits for the first time this year. The mercury hit 100 degrees at Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport yesterday afternoon. So far this month, San Antonio, Austin, Waco, Lubbock and Abilene are among the Texas cities to top the 100-degree mark.
FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) - The union machinists' strike at Lockheed Martin appears to be nearing an end. The union is expected to vote this week on a tentative contract agreement reached with the company over the weekend. Union members said they opposed Lockheed's proposed changes to health care and pension plans.
